White flowers have been used in symbolism throughout in history in myriad ceremonies, both religious as well as social. Depending on the occasion, white flowers may embody purity, innocence, reverence or humility or may even convey sympathy in a funeral. Some communities believe that white florals act as aphrodisiacs…no wonder then that it forms a major component of bridal and wedding decorations, including the honeymoon suite!! Consequently, white floral notes are used in perfumes and are associated with various occasions.
There are five types of white flowers that are used as floral notes - Jasmine, Gardenia, Tuberose, Orange Blossom and Lily. The white floral group is bestowed with a common heterocyclic organic compound, Indole, which produces that enticing, seductive scent. Indole is produced by a variety of bacteria and therefore occurs naturally around us. The interesting part is that Indole has an intense faecal odour; however, at low concentrations, it has a flowery smell. Indole is known to trigger production of serotonin, the chemical which exists in chocolate and anti-depressants and results in feelings of happiness in the human mind.
Indoles are known to give that heady, sexy touch to a perfume that makes you irresistible to the opposite sex. About 10,000 lbs of flower produce 2.2 lbs of oil, which makes it quite a costly component. Indole is not the only component in white flowers and the mix of white flower essences gives the heart notes in a perfume.
