“A day without a friend is like a pot without a single drop of honey left inside”…So goes one of the many memorable quotes of Winnie the Pooh, the lovable anthropomorphic bear, who has regaled generations of children with his antics. Little wonder then that most children and even grown-ups, who as children had been fans of Pooh, associate honey with him, considering his undying love for this sweet, viscous liquid. This natural sweetener has been poured over muesli uncountable number of times at breakfast and added to our cuppa… but a lesser known use of honey is in the field of perfumery. Honey contains volatile organic compounds which determine its flavour and aroma. However, the honey that is used in most perfumes today is a synthetic one. In a few instances, Honeycomb Absolute, extracted from natural wax in the honeycombs is used in scents.
Our Middle Eastern friends, the Arabs, were the first to use honey as a fragrance. We have come a long way since then and modern perfumery has refined the use of honey in perfumes. The honey aroma used in fragrances bestows ‘honey-like’ qualities upon the perfume in that, when inhaled, it gives you a warm, opulent, rich feeling that uplifts your mood. In this, one must keep in mind that this gourmand aroma acts as the ‘better half’ of a spouse would do i.e, it enhances the floral notes along with which it is usually blended, just as a spouse enriches the aura of a partner. Depending on the manner in which it is combined with other ingredients, honey may confer animalistic nuances in men’s perfumes or even a sexy touch in feminine perfumes.
